Job Description
The Consultant Oncologist – Head & Neck is responsible for diagnosing and managing cancers of the head and neck region through individualized treatment plans. This role involves leading the oncology team in providing advanced care, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted treatments. The Consultant also collaborates with surgeons, radiologists, and speech therapists to ensure a holistic approach to cancer care. In addition to clinical duties, the Consultant Oncologist participates in research, education, and quality improvement initiatives.Diagnosis and Evaluation: Evaluate patients with cancers of the head and neck, including the throat, mouth, nasal passages, sinuses, salivary glands, and larynx. Perform clinical assessments, review imaging studies (e.g., CT, MRI, PET scans), and conduct biopsies or other diagnostic tests to confirm diagnosis. Work closely with ENT surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists to develop accurate diagnoses and treatment plans. Treatment Planning: Develop individualized treatment plans tailored to the type and stage of head and neck cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health and preferences. Explain the risks, benefits, and side effects of various treatment options such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy. Collaborate with head and neck surgeons to determine whether surgical intervention is necessary and incorporate it into the treatment plan when appropriate. Oncological Treatment and Management: Administer or oversee the administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies for head and neck cancer patients. Work closely with radiation oncologists to coordinate radiotherapy treatments, including external beam radiation therapy or brachytherapy. Monitor patients’ responses to treatments and adjust plans as necessary based on the efficacy and side effects experienced by the patient. Manage complications of cancer and its treatment, including pain, infection, nutritional challenges, and other comorbidities. Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration: Lead and participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and case discussions involving oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, speech therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals. Ensure a coordinated approach to patient care, incorporating surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, rehabilitation, and supportive care. Collaborate with speech and swallowing therapists, physiotherapists, and other specialists to manage post-treatment rehabilitation. Patient Counseling and Support: Provide compassionate care to patients and their families, offering counseling regarding diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis. Address patients’ emotional, psychological, and social concerns, working closely with oncology social workers, psychologists, and palliative care teams. Offer guidance on managing side effects and improving quality of life during and after treatment. Research and Clinical Trials: Engage in clinical research related to head and neck cancer, contributing to advancements in treatment and patient outcomes. Identify eligible patients for enrollment in clinical trials and ensure ethical and accurate trial participation. Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at oncology conferences to contribute to the advancement of head and neck cancer treatment. Education and Training: Mentor and supervise junior oncologists, medical students, and residents, providing clinical training and guidance in head and neck oncology. Participate in continuing medical education programs, workshops, and seminars to update colleagues on the latest advancements in oncology care. Lead educational sessions for patients, families, and community groups on cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options. Quality Improvement and Patient Safety: Lead initiatives to improve the quality and safety of oncology care within the hospital or clinic setting. Develop and implement clinical protocols and guidelines for the treatment of head and neck cancer in line with national and international standards. Participate in hospital audits, peer reviews, and case evaluations to ensure high standards of patient care and continuous improvement. Palliative and Supportive Care: Provide palliative care to patients with advanced or terminal head and neck cancers, ensuring they receive optimal symptom management and emotional support. Work closely with palliative care specialists to ensure that end-of-life care respects patients' wishes and provides the highest quality of life possible. Skills and Qualifications:
